History of Bank Exams

Once the banks in india followed a bank recruitment process called as BSRB (Banking Service Recruitment Board). If one has to get into the bank he/she has to clear BSRB Bank Exam. It was a common written examination for those nationalized banks at that time. In those years the competition for these bank exams was not high. So the aspirants with little effort went through the bank exams. There was no concept of bank exam coaching in those days.

Over a period of time those nationalized banks were decided to conduct individual bank exams and they came out of the BSRB(combined bank exam). Till early 2011 all the commercial banks were conducting their own recruitment process viz. Written examination, Group Discussion and Panel Interview. In those years the competition for bank exams slightly increased. After the year 2000 the aspirants needed some bank exam coaching.

In 2011, all the 19 Nationalized banks again accepted for Common Written Examination (CWE). It was announced that this Common Written Examination (CWE) for bank exams will be conducted by Institute of Banking Personnel Selection (IBPS). In short they will call this as IBPS CWE. In a year IBPS will conduct two exams for clerks (IBPS CWE for Clerk) and two exams for Probationary Officers (IBPS CWE for PO) and one exam for IT Officers (IBPS CWE for Specialised Officers). IBPS has brought vast changes in the bank exam syllabus. They removed the clerical aptitude and included the Current affairs with special reference to banking industry and Computer aptitude sections. The first common written examination was held in the month of September 2011. Students found that these CWE bank exam as difficult. Now the competition has increased never like before. Students with good academic records were also not able to clear the bank exams without bank exam coaching.

State Bank of India and its associate banks(5 nos) were not participating in the Common Written Examination(CWE) conducted by IBPS. They will conduct their own recruitment process. In a year, SBI will conduct atleast one clerk, one PO and one IT Officer bank exams.
